For new puppies, make sure to take them outside immediately after they eat, after play time, and after they first wake up (naps or overnight).
At two months old, you should take them outside every 1-2 hours. Every month after that, add one hour to that time. By six months of age, you should be able to leave your dog inside for 6-8 hours at a time.
The following are tips to ensure your pup stays on track and has as few accidents in the house as possible!
- Reward your dog generously for going to the bathroom outside, or on a pee-pad (whichever you’re training for). With pets and/or treats.
- Make sure to keep them on a regular feeding and potty schedule. The closer you keep to a timed schedule, the more likely they will respond appropriately.
- Make sure your dog is supervised at all times. If they are not with you (you are out or at work, etc), make sure they’re in a crate or a closed off area.
- If they do have an accident in the house, clean it up immediately using bleach or an enzymatic cleaner.
Remember to never punish your dog by yelling or pushing their face into it, and to never leave them unsupervised. The stricter your training and timetable, the more likely they are to learn their expected behavior.
